Fred Hinger Touch-Tone™ Timpani Series

Fred Hinger (1920-2001) was recognized throughout the world as one of the great percussion authorities and instrument designers. He was one of the most innovative players, teachers and product designers in the history of percussion. His students can be found in major orchestras, chamber groups and teaching positions around the world. He had the distinction of holding two of the world’s premier orchestral timpani positions: The Philadelphia Orchestra and The Metropolitan Opera Orchestra of New York. He headed the percussion departments at both Yale University and Manhattan School of Music.

These mallets incorporate some of Fred Hinger’s patented design features, which set them apart from any other mallets on the market today. The highest quality German felt is hand-sewn in the tradition of the original Hinger Timpani mallets. With eight models, two styles of handles and the ability to adjust the feel and touch of the mallet, the Hinger Touch-Tone™ mallets give an unlimited palette of sounds to the performer.

The patented weight system on the Pro-Custom 1 aluminum handles allows the performer to instantly adjust the feel, balance, and sound characteristics of the mallet. Sliding the weights forward produces the fundamental tone response of a much heavier stick. The 5/8-inch, thin-wall aluminum shaft has the lightness of a bamboo handle, the stiffness of a hardwood handle and the consistency pair-to-pair that only a man-made product can achieve.

For those who prefer a very lightweight wooden handle, the Pro-Custom™ 3 line offers the same superb craftsmanship on a 5/8-inch diameter maple wood stick. Weights and/or grips can be added separately, if the player so desires.

Markus Rhoten Timpani Series

The Malletech line of Markus Rhoten bamboo timpani mallets are hand-crafted for the professional timpanist and for those who intend to become professional timpanists. Principal Timpanist of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra and faculty member at the Juilliard School of Music, Markus is the perfect musician to design a line of timpani mallets that bring European timpani traditions to America.

The Rhoten Series is not comparable with other bamboo mallets. While most are made in the American tradition of core plus one or, at maximum, two layers of felt, the Markus Rhoten line has up to five functional layers of construction with a variety of core materials and structures. While such labor-intensive construction methods cost a little more, they offer the serious musician a degree of expressive nuance unachievable with less-complex designs. A custom re-felting service is offered by Malletech felt sewing experts, so that timpanists can be confident that they will be able to use each pair of these musical instruments for many years.
